Winter has its pros and cons – but for many, not only is the cold uncomfortable, it can also lead to serious depression. For those of you nodding in agreement, you’re probably suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (yes it’s a thing). It’s a type of depression caused by the changing of seasons… don’t worry though, we’re here to help you snap out of it quick!

While we like to complain during a heat wave too, the fact is that most of us would much prefer to perspire all day long, rather than shiver and layer up; and who can honestly say they don't mind the icy mornings?

So yes, spring is around the corner (with so much to look forward to, from dresses to sandals and outdoor functions), but for many, getting through the last moments of winter isn’t going to be easy without some help. 

Here are our suggestions for an instant mood boost:

Start Something New

Whether you enrol in a yoga class, or start a new hobby like knitting, try something which will take your mind off the cold, and the blues that come with it. Get the family involved, or join a club where you can meet new people and learn new things. Doing this will not only keep your mind off everything you’re trying to avoid, but also help keep you motivated and inspired — and hopefully ready for new things over the next few months of the year.

Date Nights Are A Must

Yes, we know you’re tired and that it’s cold out there, but organise a date night once a week. Not only will this give you the opportunity to dress up and feel amazing, you and your other half can spend some quality time alone, flirting over drinks, and laughing at what the kids (or your family) got up to this past week.

Give Your Diet An Energy Boost

Just as you need change, so does your body. And did you know that certain foods can improve your mood in seconds? Munch away on dark chocolate, bananas, berries, Omega-3 fatty acids and lean protein, and wake up feeling just fabulous the next day. No bloat, no sugar-overload and no guilt — all of which can add to those blues. 

Get Pampered

I don’t think there is anything better than having your hair and nails done — okay, throw in a massage if you have the time and budget. Give yourself a pamper session, or take a friend along… either way, let a therapist spoil you, even if it’s just for an hour. 

Make Time For Girl Time

You’ve made time for your man with date night, now make time for yourself by hanging out with your girls (I’d say at least once a week). It doesn’t have to be over cocktails and loud music – although that is a fab way to do it — but sometimes just a simple breakfast on a Saturday morning can lift your spirits and make your weekend. 

Have fun ladies…. and remember, it’s almost time to get those fabulous spring outfits out of the cupboard.
